Mesa Fire and Medical Department

Mesa Fire and Medical Department

  • Mesa Fire and Medical Department (MFMD) was established in 1898. The department has grown to twenty-two stations serving a population of more than half a million residents over 133 square miles.
  • The mission is to serve with CARE (compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence).
  • MFMD has an all-hazards response model that provides the highest level of emergency medical care, fire suppression, rescue, and emergency transportation services to the community. Additionally, fire prevention and community risk reduction programs support community safety and risk reduction through inspection and education programs, helping to prevent fires and other dangers before they occur.
  • Mary Cameli is the Fire Chief, and her career has spanned over 40 years. She, along with an executive management team of five or “Senior Staff,” provides administrative direction and leadership for all MFMD divisions, programs, functions, and personnel. Their responsibilities include working closely with City Management and City Council to support community initiatives, executive management of all fiscal and physical department resources, strategic planning for the future, making policy decisions, and ensuring the department reliably provides a high level of emergency response and other services to the community.
  • MFMD has approximately 500 sworn personnel who respond to approximately 68,000 calls for service and 200 civilian personnel in support staff positions.
  • All Engines and Ladders are constantly staffed with a four-member crew comprised of a captain, engineer, and two firefighters, two of whom are paramedics (Advanced Life Support) and two of whom are EMTs (Basic Life Support).
  • Throughout the city, there are 24 Engines, five Ladders, one Ladder Tender, and three Aircraft Rescue Firefighting units at two City of Mesa airports.
